CHASSIS NUMBER 10173 - History

This beautiful 330 GTS example was originally imported new into the U.S.A. by Luigi Chinetti Motors in Greenwich, CT. It is unclear who the first original owner was or where the car resided. By 1975, it was owned by Guy Mangiamele of Omaha, Nebraska and only 9,000 miles were resting on the odometer. In 1979, this 330 was offered up for private sale by Mr. Mangiamele to which he ultimately traded the car into Foreign Cars Italia in 1980 for a 308. With 46,000 miles now on the chassis, an unknown 3rd owner acquired the car from Foreign Cars Italia to then turn around and offer it back for sale with the same dealership in 1982. Breene Kerr, of Los Altos Hills, CA, then becomes the fourth owner of this automobile and proceeds to hold onto the car until April of 2004.

During the ownership of Mr. Kerr, the car saw a complete new exterior paint job, new leather interior, valve seal service, fresh brakes, new distributors, a water pump rebuild, a new top, and a new exhaust system. The car at this point had accumulated 106,000 miles yet with the restoration it was in quite great condition.

By July of 2004, the car was for sale by Symbolic Motors in La Jolla, California. Later that year, in Mid-September, the car was purchased and found its way to its 5th and current owner located in Metro Detroit, Michigan. The car was entered into the Meadowbrook Concours d Elegance (Now Concours d Elegance of America at the Inn at St. Johns) in 2006 and won the prestigious Lion Award. In 2014, this car has undergone even more restoration, thus bringing the car to a top show level condition. The restoration work was completed by the experts at Motion Products Inc. led by the famous Ferrari restorer, Wayne Obry. The project consisted of body work, repaint, engine detail, new Ansa exhaust, brakes, and a few other smaller items. Complete records and photo documentation (600+ Photos) of the restoration are offered with this sale. Regular maintenance and mechanical repairs were completed over the years by Cauley Ferrari in West Bloomfield, Michigan. This 330 GTS was recently Ferrari Classiche Certified by Cauley Ferrari and proves the originality and completeness of this example.

In August 2017, the car had the distinct honor to be shown at the Pebble Beach Concours dElgeance. It was selected by the Ferrari Factory to represent the company in its 70th Anniversary Collection which was held on Fairway one as one of 70 top examples to be shown from around the world. To be part of this once in a lifetime historical Ferrari celebration is a great addition to this 330s pedigree.

Cauley Ferrari of Detroit is very proud to offer you this exquisite example of Ferrari history. Included with the sale is the leather pouch with the original owners manuals and service and warranty cards, two original leather tool rolls, the official Ferrari Classiche book, and a detailed binder of documents and service history. Regardless of the 110,229 miles on the chassis (10,229 on Odometer), this 330 stands incredibly tall due to all the restoration work it has received over the years and of recent. Given that the car is in top mechanical and cosmetic condition, it is truly a ready to enjoy vehicle. Ferrari 330 GTS Chassis #10173 is a superb addition to any collection and truly a guaranteed contender at any Concours you choose to enter it into.

330 GTS Overview:

As a replacement to the 275 GTS, the new 330 GTS, was designed to be an elegant, open-top, V-12 grand tourer for Ferraris best customers looking for the finest automotive experience money could buy. In addition to plenty of room for two plus their luggage, the 330 GTS also boasted an incredible set of performance figures. It boasted a top speed of 150 mph, and the 330 GTS could easily outpace just about any other car on the road of its time.

Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October of 1966, its styling was instantly recognizable as a Pininfarina design. The 330 GTS epitomized mid-60s Italian GT styling with its uncluttered and elegant design, from its classic nose characterized by its shallow egg-crate oval grille to its triple-louvered vents on the rear flanks of the front fenders and on to the seductive tapered tail. The impeccable style carried on to the cars interior, which was luxuriously appointed with twin leather bucket seats and a wood-rimmed, aluminum steering wheel. With remarkably spacious proportions inside, this was the perfect place to be for a 1,000-mile road trip across the country or for a quick trip across town.

Aside from the obvious addition of its convertible top, the 330 GTS was identical to the 330 GTC coupe that had been unveiled a few months earlier at the Geneva Salon. However, the convertible was built in much more limited numbers than its closed sibling. While 598 of the 330 GTC were built in total, only 99 of the 330 GTS would leave the factory gates by the time GTS production concluded in 1968, making the convertible much more desirable than the coupe. Today, these 99 cars are highly sought after by collectors for their fine driving characteristics as well as their gorgeous looks.
